  • Established in 2011, Department of Civil Engineering offers AICTE approved B.Tech. Programme in Civil Engineering with an annual intake of 60 and M.Tech Programme in Structural Engineering with an annual intake of 18. Permanently affiliated to Andhra University, the Department has been accredited by NBA in June 2021 for three years.

    At backdrop of immense demand and preference for CSE and IT related streams by the Industry and parents, the Department of Civil Engineering, ANITS sustains this challenge with phenomenal success through the Mission of (i) Empowering our students with contemporary and industry relevant skills in Civil Engineering and (ii) Nurturing their holistic development inculcating universal human values and life skills for serving the society as leaders of their profession.

    To fulfill this Mission, the Department embraced Outcome Based Education (OBE) with focus on Outcomes defined by PEOs, POs and PSOs. Students are inspired and motivated to improving their involvement in Learning, instilling a sense of Responsibility and self-learning among them. The Department Faculty members, trained in implementing principles of OBE, act as facilitators in student learning through innovative T-L processes continually making student Assessment and Evaluation in such a way that Assessment reinforces learning.

    Grant of Autonomy by UGC in 2015 has come as a shot in the arm in this endeavor of the Department in making efforts for development and continuous improvement of innovative curricula, thanks to the invaluable inputs and feedback provided, as members of Board of Studies, by Academic experts of Andhra University, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, premier Institutes as BMS College of Engineering, Bengaluru, RV College of Engineering, Bengaluru as well as host of Industry experts as Chief Engineer, CRDA, Amaravathi, and Polavaram projects, Kellar India, our Recruiters including MEIL, Sobha Developers, BSCPL, Design Tribe, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Capgemini etc., in addition to Academic Council, Management, Principal, PAQIC, Dept. Faculty members, Alumni and students.

    Today, the Program curriculum offered by the Department is, as much as feasible, holistic, flexible, learner centric, innovation driven, to develop not only the higher order cognitive capacities such as Critical thinking and problem solving, but also social, ethical and emotional capacities and dispositions to lay emphasis on the development of creative potential of each student in addition to job orientation based on industry needs, based on the guidelines of AICTE model curriculum and NEP-2020.

    Students chapters of IEI, ASCE and IGS in the Department organize a host of Guest lectures, student seminars, Value Added Programs, industrial visits, workshops, Capacity development and skills enhancement activities, Program on Life skills, Career Guidance programs, Project Expo on Engineers day, Students symposia etc., every year. IEI students chapter was inaugurated by Chief Engineer, GVMC in 2014, ASCE Students chapter by Prof. G. L. Siva Kumar Babu, Professor, IISc, Bengaluru, in 2016 and IGS Students chapter by Prof. G. L. Siva Kumar Babu, President, IGS and Professor, IISc, Bengaluru in 2018.

    During the last 3 years, Guest lectures have been organized for students, by the Students chapters, On “Advanced Topics in Concrete Technology” by Prof. N.V. Ramana Rao, Director, NIT-Warangal; On “Recent innovations in stabilization of earthen building materials” by Prof. H.B. Nagraj, Professor and Head of civil Engineering, BMS College of Engineering. Bengaluru; On “Uniqueness and Challenges in the Construction of New Parliament Building” by P. Bhagat Singh, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Ministry of Housing & Urban affairs, Govt. of India; On “DRDO in the world of Engineering & Technology” by Dr. H.N. Das, Scientist G, Project Director, NSTL, DRDO; on “Latest trends in Foundation Technologies for complex ground conditions” by Mr. Madan Kumar Annam, Head of Engineering, Kellar, India; on “Current Trends in construction Industry” by D. Madhu Kiran, Managing Partner SSS Builders; on “General Practices as Site Engineer” by Er. K.S.R. Prasad, Bridge Consultant; and on “The Concepts and analysis of Roller Compacted Concrete Gravity Dams” by Dr. Injam Siva Parvathi, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering, Andhra University.

    Industrial visits are organized to Polavaram Project, Jhanjhavathi Rubber dam, Thotapalli Reservoir, Visakhapatnam Port, Narava Water treatment plant, and Waste water treatment plant, 6-lane NH Expansion project, Ultra-tech RMC Plant, Pre-Engineered construction, local construction sites etc.

    The Department also hosts Students club-Vaisishtya, which organizes such events as Model and Poster-Making Competitions, Programs on Yoga & Health, Sports Competitions, Extra-Curricular and Cultural Events on special occasions as Dussehra, Pongal.

    The Department is headed by Prof. B.N.D. Narasinga Rao, working in this capacity since 2013 and having total 32 years of teaching and consultancy experience. The Department is supported by such distinguished faculty members Dr. A.Santha Ram, Director (Rtd.), Indian Bureau of Mines, Dr. R Rama Rao, Professor & Head of Civil Engineering (Rtd.), Andhra University College of Engineering, Prof. V.Venkateswara Rao, Professor of Geo-Engineering (Rtd.), Andhra University and other qualified and experienced faculty members apart from skilled technicians and non-teaching staff.

    Six of the Faculty members are having PhD and another 4 faculty members are pursuing their PhD, while the remaining 4 faculty members are having M.Tech. Qualification. The Department faculty members have publications in various SCI, Scopus and UGC Care Journals besides a host of Book chapters in Springer journals and conference papers. Department HoD is the Author of Text book on “Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering”, published by Wiley India. The Department was awarded UGC Minor Research Project of Rs. 3.1 Lakhs grant in the year 2017, which was successfully completed in 2019.

    The Department also offers Consultancy Services in Material testing and Geotechnical Investigations. As part of the consultancy services, Geotechnical Investigations were conducted worth of more than Rs.20 lacs over the last 3 years for the MEIL, VMRDA, MES, GITAM, Visakha Valley School and other private organizations.

    The Department has well equipped laboratories, spacious class rooms, computer centre, seminar hall, Department library etc. All classrooms and labs are well ventilated The Department also has ArcGIS, STAAD Pro, Plaxis and 25 other civil engineering licensed software.

    The students of the Department have proved their mettle by winning Inter-Institute events both outside and within the State. Students have been the Joint winner of Rs.1.0 lac Prize at Smart India Hackathon-2023, Coimbatore, organized by AICTE and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. Students have Won I prize of Rs 1,00,000 in Smart Hachathon event in AVISHKAAR 2024, organized by AITAM Tekkali. Students have also won I and II Prizes in Inter-Institute Events organized by IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bhubaneswar, VIT Vellore, Andhra University, GITAM University, GMRIT, GVP, etc.

    Students of 2023-24 are selected in Campus Recruitment by MEIL (43), BSCPL (10), Sobha Developers (8), TCS (2), IMEG (2) and Acmegrad (2). One student Appala Naidu of 2023-24 is selected for L&T Build India Scholarship for M.Tech. Admission in IIT, Madras. K.Balaram has been selected for admission in NIT, Kurukshetra, and another 5 Students have joined NICMAR, Pune/Hyderabad for MBA (4) and M.Tech. (1). P.Nikhil of 2022-23 has been an entrepreneur and started his firm Neustruct Engineering Services, Visakhapatnam.

    1 Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
    2 Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
    3 Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
    4 Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.

    1 Plan and develop safe, economical and sustainable buildings and other structures based on applicable professional standards, codes and ethics.
    2 Analyze and solve stability problems in soils for design of foundations and earth structures and plan and design highway, railway and other transportation systems based on applicable safety standards, codes and ethics
    3 Plan and develop irrigation and water supply systems and analyze and solve problems due to pollution of air, water and land leading to a nourished, richer and healthy society.
